An Angel on the Highway

AngelontheHighway
I am always lifted up and encouraged when God speaks to my innermost spirit through some event. Some would say that it is just coincidence, an accident that was merely by chance, fate, or luck that we are in the right place at the right time. But I beg to differ. Most Christians, I believe, would consider those incidents to have been orchestrated by God. These orchestrations, you may have also heard referred to as divine appointment, a God thing, a God wink, a touch from heaven, or a Godincidence. It can be life changing. Now read the story below (author anonymous), and tell me then if you don’t believe in Godincidences.

(Source: Faithhub) Every now and then God puts us in the position where we have the opportunity to be someone else’s guardian angel.  His hand guides us so that we’ll be in the right place at the right time.  It’s up to us to recognize His intention and do His will.  It’s not a coincidence that you happen to be there right when a complete stranger needs a hand.  God put you there.  The following is a terrific story from an anonymous author who found himself in that position and was able to be someone’s guardian angel.

I just had one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and wanted to share it with my family and dearest friends. Here it is:

I was driving home from a meeting this evening about 5, stuck in traffic on Colorado Blvd., and my car started to choke and sputter and died.

I barely managed to coast, cruising, into a gas station, glad only that I would not be blocking traffic and would have a somewhat warm spot to wait for the tow truck. It wouldn’t even turn over. Before I could make the call, I saw a woman walking out of the “quickie mart” building, and it looked like she slipped on some ice and fell into a gas pump! So I got out to see if she was okay. When I got there, it looked more like she had been overcome by sobs than that she had fallen. She was a young woman who looked really haggard with dark circles under her eyes. She dropped something as I helped her up, and I picked it up to give it to her. It was a nickel.

At that moment, everything came into focus for me: the crying woman, the ancient Suburban crammed full of stuff with 3 kids in the back (1 in a car seat), and the gas pump reading $4.95. I asked her if she was okay and if she needed help, and she just kept saying “I don’t want my kids to see me crying,” so we stood on the other side of the pump from her car. She said she was driving to California and that things were very hard for her right now.

So, I asked, “And you were praying?” That made her back away from me a little, but I assured her I was not a crazy person and said, “He heard you, and He sent me.”

I took out my card and swiped it through the card reader on the pump so she could fill up her car completely, and while it was fueling walked to the next door McDonald’s and bought 2 big bags of food, some gift certificates for more, and a big cup of coffee. She gave the food to the kids in the car who attacked it like wolves, and we stood by the pump eating fries and talking a little.

She told me her name, and that she lived in Kansas City. Her boyfriend left 2 months ago and she had not been able to make ends meet. She knew she wouldn’t have money to pay the rent January 1st, and finally, in desperation, had called her parents, with whom she had not spoken in about 5 years. They lived in California and said she could come live with them and try to get on her feet there.

So, she packed up everything she owned in the car. She told the kids they were going to California for Christmas, but not that they were going to live there.

I gave her my gloves, a little hug and said a quick prayer with her for safety on the road. As I was walking over to my car, she said, “So, are you like an angel or something?”

This definitely made me cry. I said, “Sweetie, at this time of year angels are really busy, so sometimes God uses regular people.”

It was so incredible to be a part of someone else’s miracle. And of course, you guessed it, when I got in my car it started right away and got me home with no problem. I’ll put it in the shop tomorrow for a check, but I suspect the mechanic won’t find anything wrong.

Sometimes the angels fly close enough to you that you can hear the flutter of their wings.

  1. That was an awesome story. It is wonderful to see how God puts us everyday in positions where we can minister to people but sometimes we are not ready or open to do God’s will. Jesus said that we are to minister to the stranger and to those in need. Nobody has to see what we do, but God knows every move we make. There are so many needy folks and if everyone would do a little, we would have more people understand the love of God.
Blessings to you in this New Year.

    1. Thank you Elaine for your comment. I know you too have many Godincidences also to share.

Let me jog your memory of some 40 years ago. Did we also encounter Angels on the Highway? I don’t believe that it was just coincidence that God spared our lives. It might have been a tragic highway accident. Perhaps you remember me writing you and members of Living Gospel back in July of my recollection.

In the 1970s, you and I and members of Living Gospel Church attended a Christian mission’s conference at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. I was in college at the time. I also remember that I was unable to afford the trip, so Bob St. George purchased my ticket so that I could go.

I remember that it was an extremely cold winter, one in which there was much snow. After the conference was over, I remember standing outside waiting to board the bus to come home. Icicles formed on my mustache. It must have been 20 degrees below zero. It was a long trip home to New Jersey, especially with the severe snow storm that we encountered on our return trip.

Hours passed by. I recall for one stretch of highway, many of us were singing it seemed for hours, songs of praise to God. I have to believe that God was delighted by our joyous song to Him. Snow continued to fall as we passed long stretches of tall snow banks piled high on both sides of the highway. As we continued along a long stretch of highway, some of us heard a tire blow out on the bus.

Do you know what happens when a tire blows out on an open highway that is wet with snow and ice? That is a rhetorical question, but I did a google search anyway. 1) the heavier a vehicle or the faster it is moving, the more heat the brakes have to absorb to stop it; 2) the distance you should look ahead of your vehicle to stop at highway speeds is about a ¼ mile at 55 miles per hour; 3) during a blow out, skidding is likely as is the vehicle going out of control.

I don’t know why this event of over 40-years ago stands out in my mind but it made a lasting impression. I always remember it as a miracle that no harm came to us and that we came to an immediate stop when the bus driver applied his brakes. As I recall, we sat on the side of the road waiting for roadside assistance to come. The bus driver who was visibly shaken up was crying. He apparently felt that something miraculous had just happened, surprised that the bus came to an immediate stop and that the bus did not veer off the road or skid.

Did an angel hear our singing and protect us from what the bus driver thought certain catastrophe? Whether it was angels, or God, or just chance, it is an event that I have always remembered. What do you remember of this event some 40-years ago? Just curious.

      Blessings,

      Bill

      1. Bill, I did not go to Urbana. I knew people who did. I don’t remember that incident but praise the Lord for His mercy and protection. We were open to God and on fire for Him. We could not do enough to serve and obey Him. Those were awesome years. God did miracles all the time. It is by His grace that we are alive because so many things could have happened. I remember many almost car accidents and God protected me by inches. I remember running in the house for something taking one minute and on the road encountered a bad intersection accident that I missed by one minute. Yes, His angels are always watching out for me and they watched out for you that snowy day 40 years ago. He spared you with a plan and purpose. It was all God and not chance.
My heart is burdened for so many young people who do not live for God and serve Him. There are so many just fulfilling requirements with church and we need to pray for that revival fire to come on them today. We did not have it all together back then, but God was real and our personal Savior. God worked in our circumstances and behind the scenes putting every detail of our lives together.
I will call and set up a time for you to help me with computer stuff in the new year. i have been too busy and really appreciate your offer.
        Blessings,
        Elaine
