“My Heart Cries” is the last song John D’Elia and I composed and recorded together in 2019, before COVID shut everything down.
Recently, I pulled the original recording out of the archives and decided to experiment with it using Suno AI. The result is this newly reimagined version of our original song.
What surprised me was how closely Suno captured the musical character of the original. The harmonic and chord structure remains remarkably similar to John’s instrumental arrangement, while the backing track, phrasing, and vocals have been given a fresh treatment.
And then there’s the guitar solo. 🎸
I originally tried to preserve John’s solo exactly as he played it, but AI doesn’t quite work that way. Instead, Suno interpreted the original—and what emerged retains much of John’s creativity, phrasing, and style.
So when you hear the guitar break at 2:07, you’re hearing an AI interpretation rooted in John’s original guitar work.
And, thankfully, Suno replaced my original vocals too! 😊
Inspired by Psalm 27, “My Heart Cries” is upbeat, fun, and has its roots firmly planted in the sounds of the ’70s and ’80s—which is one reason we called ourselves The Throwbacks.
But the story of the song actually goes back much further.
It began as “Hear O Lord” in the 1980s, originally written for voice and piano. Just for fun, I later arranged it for elementary school concert band while I was teaching music.
They loved it!
Then, in 2019, John and I teamed up to expand and complete the song—adding lyrics, guitars, drums, and a whole new energy.
And now, more than 35 years after it first began, I’ve pulled it out of the archives one more time.
So here it is—
